Violin Lessons for Adults

One of the things I enjoy most about teaching is working with adult students.

Over the years, I have worked with various adult students. Some picked up the instrument because they never had the opportunity to, when they were younger.

Others played the violin as children and return years later, rediscovering an interest that had quietly taken a backseat to studies, work, and life.

I also work with adults who have previously learnt the violin with other teachers and are now looking for a clearer, more structured approach to learning.

Learning Violin as an Adult

Adult students always bring a genuine desire to learn. They ask thoughtful questions, take ownership of their progress, and appreciate understanding not just what to do, but why and how to go about it.

Learning as an adult also comes with challenges.

Between work commitments, family responsibilities, and the countless demands of daily life, finding time to practise can sometimes feel like an achievement in itself.

It is not uncommon for adult students to feel frustrated that they know what to do, but their hands suddenly refuse to cooperate.

After all, the violin has spent centuries humbling perfectly intelligent people…. 😉

A Personal Approach to Learning

Every adult arrives with different goals and experiences.

Some work towards examinations or performances. Others want to revisit a childhood passion, learn a favourite piece, or simply enjoy making music after a long day at work.

What I find particularly rewarding is seeing my students discover that they are capable of far more than they initially believed.

It may be overcoming a technical challenge, playing a favourite piece, or simply becoming more confident with the instrument. These moments often remind us that progress is not measured by how quickly we learn, but by our willingness to keep learning.

Some of my most rewarding teaching relationships have been with adult students who simply decided to begin, one lesson at a time, and to still show up for class despite being hungover…..
